Different Knitting Patterns

Knitting involves creativity, patience, and also sharpens the brain giving it enough exercise. It is a great activity to take up for any age group. There are many patterns in knitting and even the experts must not have covered every pattern. The intertwining of yarn can great beautiful patterns and designs and give each style its unique name, identity, and look. Any knitting pattern involves 2 types of stitches: the knit and the purl. All patterns have a combination of these and some variations of these 2 major stitches.

The knit stitch is made by creating a loop at the back of the piece you’re working on and the purl stitch uses the loop made in the front of the work. Using these 2 types of stitches, all patterns are created. Let’s have a look at some popular knitting patterns that are used commonly and easy to follow for beginners in knitting.

1. Garter Stitch:

This is the simplest form of knitting and is done by knitting every stitch in every row. The knitted pattern looks like ridges in horizontal form row after row. It looks the same inside out. This is the most basic stitching pattern and this pattern is used to make stretchy and thick garments. It can be used to make simple scarves, table centerpieces, and even baby boots/socks. 

1. Stockinette Stitch:

 This is another simple and easy pattern for knitting. It is done by knitting all stitches in one row and purling all stitches in the 2nd row and alternating this to create a pattern. So there is an alternate working of knitting and purling rows. It looks like small Vs in the front and rows of ridges at the back. So, there is a front and backside in this kind of knitting pattern. This pattern also gives a smooth and clean look to the fabric.

1. Rib Stitch:

This pattern is done by alternating knit and purl stitches one after the other on the entire row. It will create columns of knits and purls. This stitch pattern can be done in several variations like 1x1 ( 1knit, 1 purl), 2x2, 3x3, 4x4. Even irregular stitches can be used like a 5x1 grid or 7x3 or any other combination as per your designing wishes.

1. Seed Stitch:

 In Rib stitch we alternate the knit and purls in the same manner on each row which creates columns of knits and purls. In Seed stitch, the pattern is alternated in every row. So, row 1 has knit, purl, knit, purl… and row 2 has purl, knit, purl, knit, and so on and so forth. This gives the look of ridges that resemble seeds scattered, therefore the name is seed stitch. this is a very sturdy type of stitch pattern.

1. Moss Stitch:

 This pattern is created by doing rib stitches for 2 rows and then doing either only knits or only purls in the 3rd row and then repeating the pattern.
